2008 Sprint ST
Life is full of
compromises, as are many motorcycles. The Sprint ST,
thankfully, doesn't have to make any. It's a sports bike
that covers miles, a touring bike that carves corners
with a truly usable mix of poise, power and all-round
practicality. *
As an all-round
sports-touring motorcycle the Sprint ST has all the
right ingredients yet at the same time is much more than
the sum of its parts, combining real riding pleasure
with real-world practicality.
The Sprint ST’s
1050cc
liquid-cooled three-cylinder six-speed engine is
fuel-injected, naturally, and tuned for a well-rounded
and seamless power delivery. A great deal of the ST’s
charm emanates from its distinctive, soulful and
ever-willing power unit. And with a peak power output of
125PS (123bhp) at 9,250 rpm it’s exhilarating in equal
measure.
The twin-spar
aluminium frame and single-sided swing-arm also play a
major part in the ST’s appeal. As do the 43mm forks
(adjustable for spring preload) and rear mono-shock
(adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping) as
they ensure measured, reassuring handling whether two-up
and fully loaded, or flying a solo sporting mission. Add
powerful, four-piston brakes up front and the ST’s
chassis provides a remarkable platform for a hugely fun,
yet useful, usable, bike.
Newly redesigned for 2005! Including a
dramatic cosmetic makeover, inside and out! The styling
is all new, and very much Triumph. Five spoke wheels,
underseat exhaust are now standard. There is a growing
list of performance and comfort accessories coming
available for this model.
With tthree
colour options – Caspian Blue, Sunset Red,
and Aluminium Silver – the Sprint ST remains the shrewd
choice of any rider looking for a versatile, all-round
motorcycle.
For 2006 the Sprint ST has been
further enhanced with an ABS option.
With the tremendous advances made in the performance of
brakes, tires and suspension over the past decade or so,
most riders only use around 70% of their bike's braking
ability. ABS is a great way of improving this statistic,
particularly when faced with a panic situation or when
riding on wet roads.
"Many riders feel an ABS system distances the rider from
his machine but this really isn't the case,"" says
Triumph's New Product Development Manager, Ross
Clifford. "The system is carefully designed to be
unobtrusive and to retain all riding sensation and feel.
It simply adds to the rider's control under hard
braking. In particular, riders dislike the idea of a
system that dictates the balance of braking between
front and rear and for this reason we haven't used a
linked system. The front and rear brakes on the ST work
independently."
The ABS system used on the Sprint ST is similar to the
technology now standard on most cars. The system
operates at 100 calculations per second and can sense
the exact moment the wheel is about to lock up. It then
releases the brake a fraction of a second to allow the
wheel to regain grip before reapplying the brake. The
switch controlling this process operates for a mere four
milliseconds modulating the braking pressure to achieve
optimum breaking.*
